OUR HISTORY
In 1947, a group of people from La Grange, Hinsdale, and nearby Chicago suburbs felt "the need for...a musical organization to provide an outlet for the talents of individuals [and] for the listening enjoyment of the entire community" founded The West Suburban Symphony Orchestra. Initially sponsored by the West Suburban YMCA, the orchestra transitioned to management by a not-for-profit fine arts organization in 1950.
Our symphony orchestra has proudly performed in La Grange and Hinsdale throughout its history. In recent years, West Suburban Symphony groups have also staged concerts in Chicago, Oak Brook, Wheaton, Clarendon Hills, Darien, and Berwyn in northern Illinois, as well as in two cities in Great Britain.
In the years since the symphony orchestra's founding, nearly 1,000 Chicago-area residents have played and sung with West Suburban Symphony groups. Six distinguished musicians have served as music directors:
- Karl Schulte, 1947 - 1955
- Irwin Fischer, 1955 - 1977
- Ralph Lane, 1978 - 1988
- James Winfield, 1988 - 1996
- James MacDonald, 1997 - 2000
- Peter Lipari, 2001 to present
Today, Maestro Lipari's vibrant musical interpretation and audience interaction will bring new dimensions to your concert experience. Discover the difference that will make the West Suburban Symphony your choice for music in Chicago!
