SOARING MUSIC BY AMERICAN COMPOSERS concludes our indoor 2021-2022 concert season. This performance by our orchestra and chorus celebrates the musical voices of Amy Beach, Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Jennifer Higdon, and Charles Ives. The Kyrie movement from Beach’s Grand Mass in E-flat set a new standard for large-scale American choral works. Bernstein's Chichester Psalms combines ecumenical themes with a theatrical flair; Chicago counter-tenor Carl Alexander joins us as soloist. Chicago performing artist Elizabeth Norman will narrate inspiring passages from Abraham Lincoln's writings in Copland’s stirring Lincoln Portrait. Completing this concert are contemporary composer Higdon's ethereal blue cathedral and maverick Charles Ives' rousing They Are There.
Note: This concert will be presented without intermission and run for about 75 minutes. All performers will be up to date on their COVID-19 vaccinations. See pandemic safety protocols for our audience here.
